Avia Weghorst starts construction of mobility hub Almelo with manned fuelling and charging station: ‘Will be our flagship’

At the entrance to the XL Businesspark in Almelo, Avia Weghorst unveiled a large construction sign on Thursday. It is the starting signal for the realisation on the site of a ‘mobility hub’, which consists of an Avia fuelling and fast-charging station for both cars and trucks and a catering establishment.
Avia Weghorst wants to realise a fully-fledged ‘mobility hub’ on the site located at the slip road of the A35 motorway. Both cars and trucks should soon be able to fill up and (fast)load there. Fossil and more sustainable fuels will be available and preparations have been made to offer hydrogen. There will also be a food and drink facility with seating. According to the initiators, the mobility hub will meet a regional need for facilities for daily travellers as well as business traffic crossing the A35 and visitors to the XL Businesspark. “We are happy that this development is now visible on site. It is an important step in further strengthening the infrastructure around the XL Park and of importance for both entrepreneurs and commuters in the region,” said Jan Geerdink, project director of the Regional Business Park Twente (RBT).
Niels Seinen, director of Avia Weghorst, says he is “tremendously happy” with the location right on the motorway. “It will be our new flagship, right in the heart of our operating area. It fits our ambition to realise strategically located, future-proof locations that respond to the mobility demand of the future.”
Legal battle
The realisation of the project is the result of a long process. The licence for the original petrol station was initially awarded to EG Group. After talks in late 2024 between EG Group and Avia Weghorst, the project was handed over to the latter party with the licence. This brought an end to years of legal battle.
Official construction of the station will start in early July. If everything goes according to schedule, the new mobility hub will open its doors in early 2026.
