New grant aims to make more private charging points accessible in Drenthe

The province of Drenthe is introducing a new grant scheme for businesses, associations and other organisations wishing to make their charging points accessible to the public. Applications for the Drenthe Public Charging Points Grant (SOLA) can be submitted from September 2026.
Through this scheme, the province aims to make better use of the existing charging network. Organisations can receive a grant for installing new charging points that can also be used by others, as well as for making existing charging points publicly accessible. The grant can be used, amongst other things, for the purchase and installation of a charging point, enabling payments via, for example, a charging card, debit card or mobile phone, and adapting car parks for electric vehicle charging. Signage indicating that a charging point is available for public use is also covered by the scheme.
Due to grid congestion, it is becoming increasingly difficult to establish new connections to the electricity grid. According to the province, making private charging points available to the public can help to utilise existing connections more efficiently.
Demand for charging points in Drenthe is rising as the number of electric cars increases. According to the province, forecasts by ElaadNL – the knowledge and innovation centre for smart and sustainable charging – indicate that by 2030, charging points at businesses, institutions and community organisations will form a significant proportion of the total charging network. Making private charging points available to the public is therefore one of the ways in which the province aims to further expand the charging network.
