Growing fleet of V2G shared cars should help reduce grid congestion Utrecht

Share car company MyWheels is further expanding its fleet of bi-directional cars in Utrecht municipality with eighty Renault 4s. This increases the number of vehicles that can feed power back to the grid to 250 cars.
The expansion comes at a time of further grid congestion in the province of Utrecht. Grid operator TenneT announced earlier that from 1 July, no new or heavier electricity connections will be available for large-scale users in large parts of the province. Entrepreneurs who want to expand their connection will end up on a waiting list as a result.
According to MyWheels, Renault, We Drive Solar and the municipality of Utrecht, the vehicles can be jointly used as temporary energy storage via vehicle-to-grid technology (V2G). In this, cars charge at times of low demand and supply power back to the grid during peak moments to relieve the load.
The project started last summer. The aim is that by the end of this year, five hundred of Utrecht’s total of one thousand shared cars will be equipped with this technology. According to the initiators, this could relieve about ten per cent of the pressure on the local power grid.
