Circle K opens first independent convenience store in Denmark

Circle K will open a new shop at Denmark’s Billund airport in the first half of 2026. This is the first time the company has opened a convenience store in Denmark without a connection to a petrol station.
The new shop will be centrally located in the departure and arrival hall of the airport and will be accessible to both travellers and visitors. The airport is Denmark’s second largest. “We want to meet our customers there, also outside the petrol station,” says Peter Rasmussen, ceo of Circle K Denmark. “Billund airport has more than three million travellers a year and is therefore an obvious place to present Circle K as a pure convenience store. We are already a strong name in Denmark and now we are taking the next step in our development.”
‘More than a petrol station’
The shop will be the first independent Circle K outlet in Denmark and will be operated as a franchise. The opening aims to gain experience with the Circle K concept in the Danish market and build on the international experience with independent shops. “We want to dispel the perception that Circle K is only a petrol station. With standalone shops, we have the opportunity to compete on new terms and expand our presence in the food and convenience market,” Rasmussen said.
432 locations
In Denmark, Circle K operates two separate brands (Circle K and INGO), with a total of 432 locations across the country. Of these, 205 are fully-fledged stations that, in addition to fuels under the Circle K brand, also offer food and drink and car wash services. Fast charging points are also available at many of these locations. The more than two hundred shops generate an annual turnover of 3.5 billion kroner (about €468.6 million), making them Denmark’s largest convenience store chain, by its own admission.
In the Netherlands, Circle K opened its first petrol station shop almost two years ago. Since then, the company has been working on a large-scale conversion of petrol station shops in Central Europe to the Circle K concept. In total, around 2,000 locations are involved, including around 250 in the Netherlands.
