‘Number of public charging points more than tripled in five years’

Over the past five years, the number of public charging points for electric cars has tripled. This is according to an ANP analysis based on figures from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO).
In 2025, there were almost 210,000 public charging points in the Netherlands, which includes public, semi-public and fast charging points. A year earlier, there were about 181,000. Five years ago, in 2020, there were about 63,000 public charging points for electric cars.
The RFO has been recording the figures since 2019. Since then, almost 35,000 public charging points were added every year on average. Almost all municipalities now have more public charging points than a year earlier. In 38 municipalities, including the municipality of Hilversum, this number did decrease. In Hilversum, 216 charging points disappeared. As in 2024, most charging points are in Amsterdam, some 16,000. Rotterdam follows with over 11,000.
The increase in the number of charging points can be explained, writes the ANP, by the growing number of hybrid and fully electric cars. In 2025, there were almost 1.2 million of them. Five years earlier, there were over 270,000.
