Holthausen Energy Points is the second organisation in the Netherlands to produce verifiably green hydrogen

Holthausen Energy Points, based in Groningen, is the second company in the Netherlands – after Hysolar – to produce verifiably certified green hydrogen.
The certification was partly achieved through a partnership with Engie. The energy company supplies 100 per cent renewable electricity that can be traced back to its source: a wind farm in Almere, situated between Holthausen’s two sites in Amsterdam and Groningen. Holthausen thus complies with the European RFNBO requirements, which apply to the electricity needed for renewable hydrogen.
In order to claim that hydrogen is certified green, every kilowatt-hour of electricity must be demonstrably renewable. To this end, Holthausen and Engie have entered into a five-year Corporate Power Purchase Agreement (CPPA), under which Holthausen’s electricity consumption is linked, at quarter-hourly intervals, to the output of the Jaap Rodenburg 2 wind farm in Almere. Through EnDeal, Engie’s energy management platform, Holthausen gains insight into the current energy market and can set its own price limits for production.
Speedboat
“We see ourselves as the speedboat in the energy transition,” says Carl Holthausen, director of the Holthausen Group. “When we see that something is needed, we want to take decisive action. In Engie, we have a partner that can keep up with that pace. Now we can really start scaling up our production of verifiably green hydrogen in the coming years.”
At the end of 2025, Hysolar became the first company in the Netherlands to be officially certified for the production and distribution of sustainable hydrogen in accordance with the European Renewable Energy Directive.
Holthausen Energy Points is part of the Holthausen Group, a family-run business with around fifty employees that originally operated in the industrial gases, propane and butane sectors.
