Number of fully electric passenger cars in the Netherlands approaching 700,000, hydrogen-powered cars marginal

The Netherlands currently has almost 700,000 fully electric passenger cars. In addition, our country also has almost 550,000 so-called ‘plug-in hybrids’, passenger cars that run partly on fuel and electricity. In contrast, the number of hydrogen-powered passenger cars in our country remains marginal.
This is according to the latest data from the Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland (RVO). According to the RVO, 689,051 fully electric cars (BEV) are currently driving around in the Netherlands. This number is growing slowly but surely and will soon pass the 750,000 mark in our country. The number of so-called plug-in hybrid passenger cars (PHEV) in the Netherlands, stands at 543,355, according to the government agency. Of these, the number of cars in our country is also growing, but not as fast as the fully electric ones. Although it seems like electric driving is the norm in the Netherlands, the figures compared to those of the total fleet of over 9 million cars are still modest. For instance, fully electric cars and plug-in hybrids together currently have a market share of 13.2 per cent. This means that more than one in 10 of all passenger cars driving around our country is electric.
Hydrogen cars
Although hydrogen-powered cars were predicted to have a great future, they are not yet really taking off in the Netherlands. For instance, there are currently 683 so-called FCEVs, hydrogen-powered cars, driving around in our country. The number of light commercial vehicles running on hydrogen in our country currently stands at 40. Hydrogen-powered heavy commercial vehicles are 51 and the number of hydrogen-powered buses stands at 62. These numbers are very small, especially compared to the entire fleet of vehicles in the Netherlands. Nevertheless, in the transport sector, the number of hydrogen-powered light and heavy commercial vehicles is on the rise. The investments being made to grow the number of hydrogen refuelling stations in our country, while at the same time allowing the price of a kilo of hydrogen at the pump to fall sharply, could start to ensure further growth in the transport sector.
100,000 charging points
The number of regularly accessible charging points in the Netherlands exceeded 126,000 at the beginning of March. In addition, our country also has 79,025 limited publicly accessible charging points, according to the government agency. The number of fast charging points still stands in stark contrast, as it stands at 6,626. This means that owners of an electric passenger car can go to over 211,000 charging points to charge the vehicle. In reality, there are many more EV charging points, as the Netherlands is also estimated to have more than 650,000 home charging points.
