Podcast with TanQyou and Fountain Fuel: ‘The energy transition is not an either-or discussion’

What is the ideal fuel mix for the filling station of the future? That question is the focus of a new episode of the podcast Mobility Energy Talks. Guests include Marja Versleijen, CEO of TanQyou, and Stephan Bredewold, founder and co-owner of Fountain Fuel.
Will it be hydrogen, electricity, biofuels or will petrol and diesel remain indispensable for the time being? Or will it instead be a combination of all these energy carriers? Versleijen and Bredewold represent different perspectives within the energy transition, but share the conviction that the future petrol station – or rather mobility hub – is all about a mix of solutions. In conversation with host Luberto van Buiten (editor-in-chief Mobility Energy) and co-host Paul Blonk (editor Mobility Energy), Bredewold stressed that it is not an either-or discussion between electric driving and hydrogen. “The solutions are complementary to each other. We are not going to make it with just one solution.”
Versleijen especially sees opportunities in the further development of mobility hubs: locations where different forms of energy and mobility services come together. “We no longer think in petrol stations, but in hubs that respond to user needs. It’s not just about refuelling or charging, but also additional facilities such as laundry facilities, parcel lockers, food concepts and possibly even recreational functions such as padel.”
The podcast also briefly discusses the role of the government. Subsidies such as the SWIM scheme play an important role in kick-starting the hydrogen market, according to Bredewold. Furthermore, the guests emphasise that the energy transition requires cooperation and realism. “Especially for smaller entrepreneurs who want to move with the energy transition, it is almost impossible to take that step alone,” says Versleijen. “Start small, find partners and build it step by step. The perseverer wins.”
